A Florida man, Michael Dunn, who was convicted of first-degree murder after he killed a teenager in an argument over loud music, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole, according to the Associated Press.
The life sentence imposed by Circuit Judge Russell Healey was reportedly mandatory for the 47-year-old man after prosecutors decided not to seek the death penalty.
"Mr. Dunn, your life is effectively over. What is sad, is that this case exemplifies that our society seems to have lost its way," stated Healey.
Michael Dunn, who is white, reportedly fired 10 times into a sports utility vehicle carrying black teenagers on November 2012 and killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis outside a Jacksonville convenience store, according to prosecutors.
Evidence reportedly showed that Dunn fired the shots during an argument over the volume of music coming from the SUV that Davis and three other black teenagers were in. The 47-year-old man was reportedly convicted of three counts of second-degree murder in his first trial because he continued to fire into the vehicle as the driver attempted to flee.
Dunn was reportedly sentenced to an additional 90 years in prison for three attempted murder convictions and another 15 years for firing into an occupied vehicle, according to NBC News.
Dunn reportedly claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that David allegedly rolled down the window and flashed what he believed to be a gun after the two spoke. He reportedly added that he kept firing at the vehicle to make sure no one shot back at him.
"I want the Davis family to know that I truly regret what happened. If I could roll back time and do things differently, I would. I am mortified that I took a life whether it was justified or not," Dunn stated at Friday's sentencing hearing.
Davis' mother, Lucia McBath, stated that she had always taught her son to love and forgive.
"Therefore, I too much be willing to forgive and so I choose to forgive you Mr. Dunn for taking my son's life," McBath stated in court.
