Cain Velasquez's next fight opponent Fabricio Werdum was almost poisoned to death recently in Mexico. As of this posting, the heavyweight title contender and his entire team are now safe from harm's way.
Cain Velasquez's next fight against Fabricio Werdum is scheduled for November 15th in Mexico, with the UFC heavyweight title on the line. But with less than a month before the bout, it was reported that Werdum and his team were nearly poisoned by carbon monoxide in the house they were renting at.
In preparation for Cain Velasquez's next fight at UFC 180, Werdum opted to bring his entire camp in Mexico. The title challenger relayed the entire ordeal to MMA Fighting, noting how a gasoline generator almost killed him and his entire team.
"It was terrible," Werdum said. "We came to Nevado de Toluca to train, and we didn't see the house before renting it. There was no power, nothing, and it was really cold there."
"I was there with 12 other guys from my team, and they got us a gasoline generator to get power," he continued. "They usually left the generator outside the house, but put this one inside the house."
"Vai Cavalo" also revealed that there were not informed about the need to turn the generator off as they turned in to sleep.
"We were training inside the house, had dinner and went to bed," Werdum said. They didn't tell us to turn that thing off before sleeping. I woke us in the middle of the night with a huge headache, nausea, and couldn't get out of bed. Everyone was dizzy. My brother got out of his bed and managed to turn that thing off. We almost died from poisoning."
Fortunately for Werdum, they are now safe from harm's way, and the Brazilian challenger has learned to make a light situation out of the entire incident.
"We're fine now. That was a huge scare," Werdum continued. "We almost died. Imagine the headlines: 'Werdum moves his camp to Mexico and dies with his whole team.' We were searching for a breath of fresh air and almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning [laughs]."
