A new Windows 10 Preview releases today, with some useful Windows Phone features showcased.
A technical Windows 10 Preview rolls out today, the latest Microsoft build since news of the new OS came out. The update offers a few tweaks in the user interface, also showcases features from Windows Phone.
Windows 10 is part of Microsoft's plan to integrate all the devices under its wing under one OS. These include versions for tablet, phone, PC, and its flagship Xbox Console. "One OS to rule them all" seems straightforward and simple enough, with more builds expected to come in the following months.
The newest Windows 10 Technical Preview comes with features Windows Phone users will find familiar; the new build includes the Action (Notification) Center, also DataSense and Battery Saver.
DataSense is currently unfinished in the new Windows 10 build, but it offers sample features to track Wi-Fi and cellular data usage, also automatically limits background data usage in anticipation of a bandwidth cap.
The Battery Saver feature of Windows Phone also limits background activity, hardware use for optimal battery usage, which comes in handy for portables and phones, a serviceable option in desktops, laptops, and on the gaming console.
The user interface changes on the Windows 10 Preview are minimal but noticeable. The pop-up animation in toggling between apps, as well as for switching between virtual desktops evidently needs polishing.
The subtle drop shadow changes are also worth noting; Microsoft admits the builds intend to exhibit quick actions, and the cleaner user interface comes later.
The first Microsoft Windows 10 Preview came three weeks ago, and the next one is expected within the same timeframe (theverge.com).
Nearly 7,000 changes were implemented on the new Windows 10 build, mostly bug fixes and tweaks. An announcement for the official Windows 10 release date is expected at the Microsoft Build 2015 conference, in April (techradar.com).
