The Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes rematch ended on a high note after the champion known as "Scarface" praised his challenger for an excellent performance on fight night. The reigning champ, however, ridiculed brash Irishman Conor McGregor.
The Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes rematch, held on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, saw an exceptional performance from the champion. Despite eating hard punches from Mendes, and being bloodied up and having his left eye closed up by round four, "Scarface" managed to wow the crowd, But this time, for his sheer grit and heart as a fighter.
After a 49-46 verdict from the judges, the Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes rematch marks the champion's ninth straight title defense as a featherweight. Most interestingly, it ended the bad blood between both men.
There may have been a back and forth exchange from both camps, and a near-brawl that broke out in August during their media day, but it was all subsequently squashed by Aldo, who was all praises towards Mendes.
"I believe Chad won a lot with this fight," Aldo said in a report by MMA Fighting. "If there's a third one, we'll win a lot. He's a great athlete and will always be fighting at the highest level. Him losing again doesn't mean he doesn't work anymore.
"He has a huge potential and we might meet again in the future," he continued. "If we keep fighting, our pockets will be full."
But as Aldo lauded his challenger, he also had a message towards the outspoken Conor McGregor. "The Notorious" has heavily criticized the champion as "being on the decline" and has made his bold predictions about being the next champion. He even posed with the belt during an interview.
Aldo's manner of ridicule, however, came elusively.
"I think the court is complete here," Aldo said in his post-fight interview with Brian Stann (in a report by Yahoo Sports!) "I'm the king. Chad is the prince and now we have a joker."
