Chris Weidman confirmed that he will be defending his middleweight title against Vitor Belfort early in 2015.
Belfort shot to stardom right after he won't back to back to back knockout wins in 2013. He will be facing the Weidman this coming February 28 which will be held at Los Angeles for the UFC 184.
According to Belfort "On Feb. 28, I will be stepping inside the cage and winning this belt. It's going to be good, right after Carnival. Los Angeles is a great place, the first place I lived when I moved to the United States. It was the right place. I'm really happy with this news."
Both fighters were supposed to meet at an earlier date on Dec 6 in Las Vegas but Weidman had to withdraw from the bout with a hand injury.
Belfort said "He was active this year, but he got hurt twice. An interim title keeps the division moving. The only person that wins with it is (the champion) that got hurt. It's frustrating for everyone - fighters, media and fans - to see that you won't have a title fight."
According to Weidman's head coach Ray Longo, the middleweight champion was flown to Los Angeles on Monday after complaining of discomfort in his left hand. Weidman said that he also felt the pain right after his match against Lyoto Machida where he came out as the winner. Doctor informed Weidman that he in fact fractured the hand, and the doctor believed this was an old injury. Longo said he believes Weidman fought Machida with a fractured hand and that the original injury was misdiagnosed.
According to Longo "Everything happens for a reason. We're going to get Chris healthy and then we're going to steamroll this guy. Believe me."
Belfort is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion as well as UFC 12 Heavyweight Tournament Champion.
As of October 6, 2014, he is #3 in official UFC middleweight rankings, #14 in light heavyweight and #12 pound-for-pound. He was also the last Cage Rage World Light Heavyweight Champion.
Many will be looking forward to this fight.
