After months of rumors and growing speculation, the Gambit spinoff has been announced to officially happen sometime soon. The "X-Men" film franchise has actually introduced many characters over the past 14 years, and it was only Wolverine who got the chance to shine in his own movie.
Now, though, it looks like Gambit will be owning his fair share of the spotlight, and he will be portrayed by "Magic Mike" actor Channing Tatum.
Josh Zeturner, the writer of the "Robocop" reboot, has been selected by 20th Century Fox to pen the upcoming blockbuster's script. Plus, it looks like Tatum will be contributing behind the camera as a producer, together with his Free Association partners Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Reid Carolin.
Deadline broke the story on the Internet and revealed that the movie's premise will be focused on a treatment by X-Men writer Chris Claremont, who originally created Gambit with the known artist Jim Lee.
"Gambit" is the latest addition to the slate of upcoming "X-Men" films, which includes "X-Men: Apocalypse", "Deadpool", "X-Force", and a third installment for the "Wolverine" franchise.
Gambit is actually a very prominent character of the X-Men since 1990. He has an uncanny ability to charge objects with the use of kinetic energy, which causes objects to explode as soon as it meets impact. More often than not, this particular superhero makes use of playing cards and a staff as his primary weapons of choice whenever he is in battle.
He was left out of the three first "X-Men" blockbusters. Thankfully for his loyal fans through the years, Gambit finally showed up in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" in 2009, played by Taylor Kitsch. Kitsch may have done a relatively decent job on his take as Gambit, despite switching in and out of the accent, but the overall negative reception of the film did not help matters much.
