Joran van der Sloot's wife has reportedly stated that her husband was "seriously injured" in a stabbing at the Peruvian prison where he is serving time for the murder of Stephany Flores, according to CNN.
However, Jose Perez Guadalupe, director of Peru's National Penitentiary Institute, which oversees the country's prisons, reportedly told a 24-hour television station that Joran van der Sloot's wife, Leidy Figueroa, is a "compulsive liar."
"For starters, no woman in her right mind goes to a maximum-security person and marries the biggest killer there," Guadalupe told Peru's Channel N.
Joran van der Sloot's wife isn't the only person to state that the Dutch citizen had been hurt. The lawyer of the convicted killer, Maximo Altez, reportedly stated on Monday that van der Sloot had recently been stabbed repeatedly in the Peruvian prison, according to Reuters.
"The doctors says the prisoner presumably hurt himself because the wounds are clean, they are not the products of a clash or aggression," stated the vice president of Peru's penitentiary system Julio Magan.
Altez reportedly stated prisoners are targeting Joran van der Sloot to draw attention to the prison where he is currently doing time.
"We believe prisoners have agreed to kill Joran van der Sloot in order to close the Challapalca prison since he is so well-known at an international level," Altez stated.
Van der Sloot was reportedly moved to Challapalca from a prison in Lima due to bad behavior in September. Van der Sloot and his wife, with whom he has a child with, reportedly protested the transfer to his current location as the person is known for its tough conditions.
Van der Sloot was reportedly sentenced to 28 years in prison after he confessed to strangling, beating and suffocating 21-year-old Flores, who was a Peruvian business student. He is also reportedly suspected of killing U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway, who disappeared during a high school graduation trip to Arbua in 2005 and was last seen with him and another man.
