Bernard Hopkins news reveals that "The Alien" blames race as the main reason for him not being able to achieve greater heights outside of boxing. "B-Hop" went specific, claiming that it was "because he's black."
At 49-years of age, Hopkins was able to accomplish feats that not many in the sport of boxing were remotely able to do. Having bagged world titles for boxing's light heavyweight division at this stage of his career is a achievement in itself, and on Saturday night, he will be defending these titles against a younger up-and-comer with menacing knockout power, Russian sensation Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev.
Bernard Hopkins news reveals that while "B-Hop" may be the superstar that he is in the world of the sweet science, he is not that big of a name outside of it. And for the man now known as "The Alien", the reason for it is mainly centered on race.
"[It's] because I'm black," Hopkins told Brian Campbell of ESPN. ""What do you think if my name was Augustine, Herzenstein, Stern? Cappello? Marciano? Don't you understand the conflict of interest?"
Hopkins argues that he would have been a bigger household name if he were not of African-American lineage, noting that he had done his part of being an American making a name for himself, through years of hard work.
"If I was any of those names of any other background, I'd be on every billboard and every milk carton and every place to be," he continued. "If we're talking 'American Dream,' here's a guy who almost threw his life away and he took this great country's great attributes and used it -- do for self, work hard and be a law-abiding citizen. I've done that for 26 years."
Bernard Hopkins news also reveals that the veteran boxer believes no one else would dare admit that race really is the issue, and that he was courageous enough to point it out.
"I have done all of that and then you look back and say, 'Wait a minute, what's wrong here?' A lot of people are not bold to say it, but I am," he said.
