Fans have been awaiting the release date of 'Sherlock' season 4 since the third season ended this January. The Emmy-award winning BBC series is known for airing its seasons two years apart from each other due to scheduling issues with its main characters.
The modern retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's crime stories proudly includes Britain's finest stars in its cast list. However, having Benedict Cumberbatch (as Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (as Dr. John Watson) as the lead characters is both a blessing and a scheduling nightmare for the crew.
With both actors having several movies lined up for the next few years, including 'The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies' which the duo are starring in together, producers are taking painstaking efforts in creating a timetable that's effective for everyone.
"Benedict and Martin are making some movies. If you say 'Who cares about movies?' I agree with you, but they are doing them so we've got to schedule around that," creator Steven Moffat previously said.
However, it's not just the actors' careers that the production team has to consider now. Earlier this month, Benedict Cumberbatch announced his engagement to theatre actress and director Sophie Hunter.
Although the happy couple did not specify a wedding date yet, it would be safe to assume that the nuptials would be sometime soon. After all, his fans and mum are asking him for 'Cumberbabies' already.
Would this new development in Cumberbatch's personal life affect the scheduling for 'Sherlock' season 4?
So far, no direct statement has been issued by producers. According to previous reports, the new season will air in January 2016 with a Christmas special preceding the usual three episodes.
There had been rumors of the premiere being moved to 2017 in lieu of Cumberbatch being considered for Marvel's Dr. Strange, however, no official announcement has been given by any of the parties.
One thing's for sure though, executive producers Moffat and Mark Gatiss are preparing "devastating" new plans for season 4.
"We have a plan to top season 3, and our plan is so devastating that our cast was reduced to tears," Moffat previously told Deadline after the Emmy Awards a couple of months ago.
Do you think Benedict Cumberbatch's wedding will delay the 'Sherlock' season 4 release date? Would you still wait for the series if it will?
