The cat cafe trend started in Japan, then made its way to NYC for a hot second, and has now settled in California.

However, unlike in Japan, the cat cafe in Oakland, California, is putting the focus on the animals rather than the people that visit the establishment.

The cats that are seen napping and playing in the Cat Town Cafe in California come from a local shelter and are available for adoption, according to the Associated Press.

"Most of them have been at the shelter for four months or more. So as much as this is a super fun experience, it's really a mission-driven project to get the cats out of the shelter and into great homes," stated Ann Dunn, founder of Cat Town Oakland, a nonprofit group that helps place cats least likely to be adopted from the Oakland Animal Shelter.

There were reportedly 14 adoptions in their first 12 days. Visitors can reportedly give a $10 donation and get one hour of personal cat-time in the cafe, where they can play with the felines and pet them.

Cat cafes have progressively been getting more popular and are now open in London, Vienna and Paris. Although they are not as common in the U.S., a half a dozen cat cafes are reportedly set to open in the U.S next year, most of them along the West coast.

Social media users and already ecstatic about the prospect of being able to visit the cats in the their area.

"I wish they would open a cat cafe close to me so I could grab some coffee and chill with some cool cats," wrote Twitter user sammlett.

After a trial run in NYC, the city will have its own official cat cafe starting December called Meow Parlour, according to AM New York. Visits will reportedly be $4 per half hour of cat time and $12 per hour.
