Sarah Markham of Florida lost custody of her child, Caleb, five months ago after she was reportedly accused of child neglect after a doctor found the infant to be malnourished.
Markham was reportedly accused of refusing to give her baby non-vegan formula even though he was dehydrated, according to ABC News.
The 24-year-old woman's lawyer, Mark O'Mara, reportedly told the news outlet that the doctor directed her to the hospital after she stated she did not want to use animal-based formula to supplement breast feeding because she was vegan and wanted to raise her son vegan. Markham reportedly immediately bought vegan baby formula and was feeding her child to supplement breast milk when she was arrested on June 24.
O'Mara reportedly stated that Markham had been trying to breastfeed but her baby had difficulty feeding, leaving him underweight.
Markham's father, Bo, reportedly believed there was no abuse or neglect, according to the website Betawired.com. Caleb has reportedly been properly taken care of by his grandparents and now weighs 17 pounds.
"I'm just so excited and ecstatic about getting him back this whole thing was a nightmare," Markham told ABC News affiliate WFTV-TV.
She continued, "I can go back to being a new mom and bonding with him. I am just very happy."
Markham will reportedly have to meet with a state-approved pediatrician to keep custody of her child, according to her lawyer.
