By now, you've probably seen the second Fifty Shade of Grey trailer, and as it premiered just recently. The first one shot up the charts as the most watched movie trailer of 2014, and while it remains to be seen if the latest teaser trailer will match up to the feat of the original, we have at least one movie that is daring to present itself as an alternative to the big screen adaptation of the popular erotic novel.
And it comes from the most unlikely of camps. Not a big name studio, not a blockbuster movie, but a small-budget, Christian film that will be released on the same day as the Fifty Shades of Grey movie on Valentine's day 2015. The movie entitled Old Fashioned follows a ex frat boy, who has committed his life to Jesus Christ and is pursuing an old fashioned courtship with a free spirited young woman. And just as the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer has just been released, so it the trailer for Old Fashioned.
The film's lead actor, Rik Swartzwelder, who also happens to the be the movie's director and writer actually opens the trailer with a short message comparing his small budget, faith based movie to the giant that is Fifty Shades of Grey. "Clearly, we're picking a fight with Fifty Shades. We're not only picking a fight, we're picking a fight with the schoolground bully, likely to get our nose busted in two," Rik says. And as opposed to the erotic come ons of the movie based on E.L. James best selling trilogy, Old Fashioned has at its core, the Christian faith.
" Love and romance are created by God and designed to lead to marriage and physical intimacy. ... I find it impossible to not believe that, deep down, we don't want to celebrate something more than Fifty Shades," Rik shares.
