One Direction interview with "The Today Show" was held last Monday. Only four band members appeared on the said TV show.
The four members of One Direction arrived to the set in Orlando, Florida through boat for the exclusive interview. "The Today Show" host Matt Lauer wondered the absence of their member Zayn Malik.
ET Online provided a clip where "The Today Show" host grilled the four members of 1D. He also opened about the alleged drug abuse of Zayn Malik.
Before the show began, TV show host already revealed that Malik wouldn't be present via Twitter. He posted, "Where's Zayn? One Direction arrives in Orlando without him. Plenty of questions, but the show goes on Today."
"Directioners" voiced out their concerns concern over Zayn's absence on the Internet. ET said due to the numbers of netizens who reacted, it caused Lauer to kick-off his interview with the band by asking about the missing singer.
As you can see on the clip provided by ET, Lauer pointed out that there were only four chairs set-up on the stage, and then he asked, "Let's start with the obvious. Where's Zayn?"
Liam Payne answered that their bandmate had a "tummy bug. He also added "We only found out this morning so we're really sad, he is as well, that he can't be here for our album release... It's still going to be a great day, I'm sure."
However, Lauer seemed unsatisfied with the answered from Payne and then he dropped a controversial question, "Liam, there's obviously a lot of concern, a lot of fans have been tweeting overnight, there's been a lot of action on social media about him. Is it something more serious than just a minor illness? There have been rumors of substance abuse. What's going on?"
Payne answered, "No, he's just got a stomach bug. He's okay. He's just at home. He just needs to rest. He's okay."
The last question of the TV host shocked 1D fans and they found it disrespectful that's why they made loud "boos."
According to ET, there haven't been any drug-related rumors surrounding Zayn recently and that could be the reason why fans raised their eyebrows during that show. However, in May of this year, there's a video showing Zayn and his bandmate Louis Tomlinson allegedly smoking marijuana. Lauer tweet about the absence of Zayn Malik received backclash including these:
