Sturridge is understood to have sustained a thigh problem and Liverpool will monitor the 25-year-old over the next two days to discover the extent of the injury.

Sturridge has not played for his club since the end of August, having hurt his thigh while on England duty.

His first comeback was scuppered by a calf problem as he attempted to rejoin full training in October.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had earmarked this Sunday's Premier League game against Crystal Palace as a possible return for Sturridge but this may have to be put on hold.

England manager Roy Hodgson was asked about Sturridge's latest injury following the 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday night.

"That's really bad news," he said. "The only positive with that is we don't play again until March.

"But that's a massive blow for Liverpool."

Sturridge was one half of English football's most prolific striking partnership last season, alongside Luis Suarez who left for Barcelona in a £75million deal after the World Cup.

The pair scored 55 goals between them in league and cup as Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City in the title race, but with Sturridge making just three appearances for the club this season the Reds have struggled for goals.

Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli - who is expected to be fit to face Palace despite picking up a minor hamstring injury in training with Italy - have two goals between them this season with all three still seeking their first Premier League goal of the campaign.

Liverpool are 11th in the table and have won just two of their eight Premier League matches since Sturridge's original thigh injury.
