Initial Super Smash Bros Wii U review raves for Nintendo's flagship fighting game; it's very playable even if incomplete.

The Super Smash Bros Wii U review is looking pretty awesome for Nintendo's title so far, even though it's yet to release fixes to complete the game. Plenty of predicted characters have been confirmed; 39 in all, at least the ones that are playable by default.

Plenty of changes have rolled out since the Super Smash Bros Wii U release date last month, and the game keeps getting better with every fix. A standout feature is the new eight-player battle mode, which steps up the mayhem of the previous titles in true, free-for-all melee.

Nintendo's knack for insane multiplayer modes is carried through in the Smash Bros Wii U gameplay, and like Super Mario Kart, four to eight players huddled around one TV is what true competition is about.

"With eight people playing simultaneously, it's hard to even put into words. There's just so much happening at once, so fast. Eight-player Smash Bros. might be the craziest, most intense video game experience I've had in years - but it's also amazing. Maybe it's the sheer novelty, but having so many people playing in the same room on the same TV was so much fun. Trash talking and in-game surprises, like an accidental explosion that kills everyone, are that much better with more people." (theverge.com)

The fun in multiplayer mode requires additional hardware, though. At least in Super Smash Bros 3DS, separate handhelds are required for the battles, but with the Wii U version there's more than a handful of controller options available in the toolshed.

The Super Smash Bros Wii U review doesn't disappoint, with solid single player modes and a superb character lineup that oozes Nintendo nostalgia.

Nintendo also throws in a few sweeteners to Super Smash Bros Wii U gameplay, with playable demos of the classic NES and Super NES games included in all their retro glory. Trophies and unlockables offer side trips to different eras in (Nintendo's) gaming history, herding old and new fans of their games into the flock.
