Facebook wants you to use it for work, not just for play.
Facebook is creating a workplace version of its service to compete with the likes of LinkedIn, Microsoft and Google for inter-office communication. The report was not specifically surprising, as Facebook staff have been using the said service in their own workplace for years to manage work related correspondence and projects.
On the other hand, there are some possible issues with this idea.
Facebook is not even permitted in work settings. Although, the new service will stand alone from the usual Facebook, the tools are not linked with many workplace environments. In the financial services business, the using Facebook and even personal email accounts are prohibited for productivity a security reasons.
Facebook will have to convince companies that it is secured with sensitive data that is surrounding the firm's discussion boards. That will be a challenge as Facebook's thrive for user information which always rubs people the inappropriate way, they have made a business out of this personal data, anyways. Will a company CEO trust Facebook to have access to their internal operations and data? Well, they answer is NO!
Companies will also operate into legacy systems that are in place already. Do they share Google Docs? DOES the group chat on Social cast? Whether they like the CEOs communication system or not, they could possibly have it running with years of data and messages that would not easily port over the Facebook system.
Facebook is always viewed as an escape from the workplace, sullying that could be disastrous. Facebook at work seems and functions, but why mess with something they already use pretty well? In short why fix something aren't broken? Most importantly risk the security of the companies' internal data, communication flow, change the organizations' workflow and operations.
