With the release date set for 2016, Mark Gatiss, co-creator of the hit BBC series "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, has hinted that viewers can "expect tragedy as well as adventure" in Season 4. The popular British show, which is scheduled to air in 2016, may be killing off a major character. But who? It depends on whether the writers stick to Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic books, or veer off from the original storyline.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Martin Freeman has speculated that his wife (both in real life and on the series) may meet her demise in Season 4. "The Hobbit" actor, who plays Watson, explained "While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. ... So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies - so at some point presumably she'll die."

Nonetheless, there is a distinct possibility that the series will not mimic the exact storyline of Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. In an interview with the Radio Times, Mark Gatiss insisted "Just because it's in the stories doesn't mean it'll happen in the series because there's an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do.

"It should be clear by now that while, of course, Doyle is our absolute god, we have gone quite a long way away as well - we've introduced Sherlock and Mycroft's parents [for instance], I don't think they've ever been seen in any adaptation - so there are lots of surprises to come," the co-creator, who also plays Mycroft Holmes, continued.

In other news, BBC has confirmed that 'Sherlock' will air a special Christmas episode in 2015. The Latin Post reports that the one-episode special will begin filming in January 2015, followed by the three-episode Season 4 production.

Care for some spoilers? The special is rumored to based on the mystery of "The Adventure of the Blue Cabuncle," and will likely address the Moriarty twist that shocked fans at the end of Season 3. Mary and Watson will also be welcoming a baby in the world, and Tom Hiddleston may be joining the cast as Sherlock's brother Sherrinford Holmes.

When asked about the series return, co-creator Steven Moffat excitedly announced, "A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..."

"Series Four! At last ! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on - again!" added co-creator Mark Gattis.
