The Davis Cup was nothing but a game full of suspense as the finals between France and Switzerland is guaranteed as it ended in a draw and will be decided on Sunday being the last of the three days of competition.
But what caught everyone's attention was how Roger Federer was defeated by Gaël Monfils on clay and losing in straight sets for the first time ever in a Davis Cup match that counted.
Monfils said "Definitely one of the top three matches of my life."
Federer came in to the match not really sure if he can play at all in the finals as he injured his back last week in London. He had little time to prepare for a clay match and had played with a tour-high 83 matches on his 33-year-old legs already this season.
Federer said "Credit to him for really coming out and bringing it. From my side, as the match went on, I just started to loosen up. I guess I needed to hit 30 big serves. I needed to slide. I needed to be in defense. I needed to play offensive tennis, get information quickly."
But in the end, Federer blamed his lack of preparation in the clay court which resulted in his demise. He said "That's a good problem for me to have to be quite honest; it put the back issues on the back burner."
Monfils broke Federer's serve five times and never allowed him to return the favor.
But the game between Monfils and Federer was different. The crowd was behind Monfils during the match which was a welcomed change by him after witnessing the crowd go wild for Federer during games at home.
He said "It was important. First, honestly, I felt it was bothering him. Second, I needed it. It's rare that you can push a crowd to go against Roger. But now that we're at home, we have to do it."
But for Federer, many are asking whether he can still withstand the pressure of the game and play with only a single days rest?
He answered "Yes, I'm ready to do it. But I expect big things from myself this weekend."
