Serena Williams and Lebron James are just among the big-name athletes who slammed police officer Darren Wilson's not guilty verdict, as the Michael Brown case was being compared to slain teen Trayvor Martin whose killer also went scot-free.
In her Twitter account, Serena Williams wrote: "Wow. Just wow. Shameful. What will it take???"
The Washington Post noted how Lebron James is comparing Darren Wilson's not guilty verdict to that of the Florida teen, who was shot dead by George Zimmerman.
The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar wrote on his Instagram: "As a society how do we do better and stop things like this happening time after time!!. I'm so sorry to these families. Violence is not the answer people. Retaliation isn't the solution as well. #PrayersUpToTheFamilies #WeHaveToDoBetter."
This wasn't the first time that Lebron James lent his voice to protest what he deemed to be an injustice. When Trayvor Martin was killed in 2012, the two-time MVP and his then teammates in the Miami Heat wore hoodies to protest the stereotype of African-American teenagers who are either gangbangers or thieves.
WNBA player Monique Currie, meanwhile, posted a series of tweets after the verdict, as culled by ESPN.
"They let Zimmermen go free and he wasnt even a cop...What should we expect when an actual cop is involved!?"
About 30 minutes later, she added: "I just need to know. If you are UNARMED and charge an officer with NO weapon they have the right to murder you?"
And again, five minutes later, Monique Currie wrote: "How to get away with Murder came to us early this week..."
Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson also weighed in on Darren Wilson's not guilty verdict as he wrote on his Twitter: "I am very disappointed with decision in the Mike Brown case in Ferguson, MO."
Then later, the hall of famer added: "We must work together to stop the unnecessary loss of young men of color. Justice was not served in Ferguson."
