A mother and father were reportedly shot by their 22-year-old son in San Diego, according to ABC News.
The son, who was reportedly diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, is the only suspect and his motive is still under investigation, according to the Times of San Diego.
"We've been actively investigating this all night, and we just don't know," stated Lt. Paul Rorrison.
The father, 61-year-old David Ellis Haynes, and the mother, 62-year-old Lissa Danielle Haynes, were reportedly shot multiple times in their Sunset Cliffs home just after 3 a.m. on Friday. The doctor was reportedly able to call 911, but when the police arrived, the couple was barely alive.
Both were reportedly pronounced dead at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center.
Police, SWAT Team members and K-9 units reportedly searched the neighborhood and arrested the couple's son, Peter David Haynes, about four hours after the shooting took place. Officers reportedly saw him try to sneak under the crime-scene tape, stated Rorrison.
The son was reportedly found armed with a handgun, according to the lieutenant.
David Haynes had reportedly been an emergency room physician for nearly 20 years at the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona, according to a statement from the hospital.
"Today we have lost an exceptional physician, colleague and friend, a man who dedicated his life career to caring for patients in our community," stated Dr. Phillip Richemont, head of the hospital's emergency medicine department, in the statement.
He continued, "His compassion and kind nature will be extremely missed."
