The writer, Linda Woolverton, said "Maleficent" full movie was "a reinvention, not just a retelling of the classic 'Sleeping Beauty' fairytale."

Elle Fanning, who played Princess Aurora, added, "When I started filming, I was such a huge fan of the animated one. I was like, 'I feel like we're breaking some weird Disney rule'. 'Maleficent' and 'Sleeping Beauty' aren't supposed to talk to each other. They're enemies. But the way it turned out, it's a fresh take on it. For the modern world, we need to have a modern story, and it is. It's very different."

"Maleficent" earned $69,431,298 in the opening weekend. It got $240,978,399 in domestic gross and $750,978,399 in foreign gross. These figures only disproved previous claim that this Disney film may discourage family audiences as it is "retelling Sleeping Beauty from the villain's perspective".

Metro said in its review that "Jolie's performance is similarly all over the place, in a good way. She's a full character, all too human. When she's hurt, she's really, believably hurt; when Stefan turns on her, she lets out a scream more powerful than any of the special effects. (It's worth noting that technically this isn't entirely live action; given all the CGI, it's almost as animated as the '59 film.) But she's at her best when she's sneering, glowering and strutting. It's what she was put on earth to do."

"Maleficent" cast also includes Elle Fanning (Aurora), Sharlto Copley (Stefan), Lesley Manville (Flittle), Imelda Staunton (Knotgrass), Juno Temple (Thistletwit), Sam Riley (Diaval), Brenton Thwaites (Prince Phillip), Kenneth Cranham (King Henry), Sarah Flind (Princess Leila's Handmaiden), Hannah New (Princess Leila), Isobelle Molloy (Young Maleficent), Michael Higgins (Young Stefan), Ella Purnell (Teen Maleficent), Jackson Bews (Teen Stefan), Vivienne Jolie-Pitt (Aurora - 5 years old), and Eleanor Worthington-Cox (Aurora - 8 years old).
