Who is Star Lord's dad? "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn drops hints in an interview.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" ended with a quick reference to Star Lord's dad, and the going rumor is he would play a big role in the sequel. Marvel is tight-lipped on the details, but director James Gunn drops hints on Peter Quill's real father in the movie adaptation.

The identity of Star Lord's dad is common knowledge in the comics, though. Spoiler alert: Peter Quill's dad in the Marvel Comics is J'Son of Spartax, also known as Jason of Sparta. J'Son comes from an alien race in Spartoi, a member of royalty, and eventually leads the Spartoi Empire.

J'Son is a jack of all trades, and a specially-skilled pilot. His craft crash-landed on Earth in the heat of an intergalactic war, where he met Peter Quill's mother.

J'Son is the safe bet for Marvel Comics fans, but the Studios could take a different tack when it comes to the adaptation. Hints were made Star Lord's dad is someone "very ancient," which opens a lot of possibilities.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" broadens the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also introducing a handful of intergalactic characters to boot. Speculation on who Star Lord's dad will be include Yondu, Thanos, Adam Warlock, and even Loki.

Gunn comments on the speculations in an IGN interview:

"It's funny, I don't want to black box it too much. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's like, we'll find out who his dad is, and it's going to serve the story. It's not going to be something like in The Crying Game, though, where the big thing was, 'He has a penis!' [or The Sixth Sense's big twist]. I don't want to do that. It's not about the revelation of who it is; it's about what his relationship is to that character."

Stay tuned for updates on "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," where Star Lord's dad is expected to make his debut.
