Sam Smith admitted to being gay even before he released his first album, "In The Lonely Hour," much to the surprise of the music industry. However, does he want to become a voice for the LGBT community?
"I'm a singer and a songwriter. I get upset sometimes because I don't talk about it too much," He confessed to Ellen DeGeneres during an interview in the latter's show last Monday. "People say, 'he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community.' I do, of course I do."
The "Stay With Me" crooner doesn't just want to be a spokesperson for gay people, however. He clarified that he wants to speak for "everyone."
He added, "Ya know, straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want to be limited."
Besides, the 22-year-old is still exploring the world - both for himself and his music.
"I'm still trying to figure everything out," he admitted.
When asked why Sam Smith admitted to being gay before he released his record, he said that didn't want people to think that he was trying to hide something.
"I wanted to do it before [releasing the album] because if I did it afterwards, people probably would have thought I was lying just to sell records," he said.
He had no qualms of admitting his sexual orientation to the world because he didn't have to grow up trying to hide his true self.
"I came out when I was like four years old," he jokingly revealed to the host. "My mom said she knew when I was like three. So I didn't have to actually properly come out."
The "I'm Not The Only One" singer recently won the American Music Award for Favorite Male Artist (Pop/Rock), beating out Pharrell Williams and John Legend. He is slated for a European tour in 2015 as well.
What do you think of Sam Smith's gay spokesperson comment? Do you think he will be an effective voice for the LGBT community?
