Carl Pistorius reportedly talked to YOU Magazine about what really happened during the controversial birthday visit he and his sister, Aimee, had with their incarcerated brother last November. He also shared some of Oscar Pistorius' update on life in prison.
Despite reports of the Blade Runner getting special treatment, the elder Pistorius insisted that his brother is treated like every other inmate at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. He started his sentence of five years for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last month.
The Sunday Times reportedly saw the siblings enter the prison without being properly checked and they were also allegedly given special privileges last November 22. However, the siblings both denied the claims.
They reportedly only brought in helium balloons to wave through the glass during their 45-minute visit that day. The celebration, however, did cause a bit of commotion in the visiting area.
"Then suddenly, there's a loud bang, giving everyone a fright," The elder Pistorius sibling shared. "The prison guard reaches for his pistol, me and Aimee dive to the floor, unsure if a shot has been fired."
When they realized that it was just a balloon that popped, they reportedly started laughing "until we're almost in tears."
He also shared more Oscar Pistorius' update on his life in jail.
The Olympic runner reportedly spends 17 hours a day in his 1.8m by 3.5m jail cell and only gets to go outside for an hour and exercise for another hour. He also shares the communal bathroom and only has a stool put there for his use.
They are still hoping for an eventual house arrest but "but it's a five-year sentence."
"There are surely desires in his heart, and over time they'll change. But he now lives moment by moment," Carl Pistorius revealed. "There's no fairytale."
Fairytale or not, the athlete reportedly decided to make the best out of his conviction.
"He often gives fellow prisoners in the hospital wing, mostly recovering from tuberculosis, advice on how to exercise and to strengthen their bodies," his brother said.
He also asked family members to donate balls instead of giving him gifts for his birthday. This was for an idea he shared with his siblings to "involve some of his [7,000] fellow inmates in playing basketball."
"He's encountering many beautiful stories from prisoners. There are people there who have committed crimes but whose lives have changed," Carl added.
Meanwhile, prosecution has filed an appeal to challenge Judge Thozokile Masipa's ruling of manslaughter for Pitorius.
