Which smartphone Android tablet is the better buy? We pit the Nokia N1 against the Nexus 9 to see which device is worth the purchase.
In terms of design and display, the Nokia N1 is made of anodized aluminum, looking a lot like the iPad Mini. It has a unibody design with rounded edges and corners, and the physical buttons were placed in the same places as on the iPad Mini. The tablet weighs 318 grams and its dimensions are 200.7×138.6×6.9 mm.
The Nexus 9 on the other hand, has a plastic body and looks like a larger Nexus 5. It measures at 228.2×153.7mm, and weighs over 100 grams more.
Since the Nokia N1 is smaller than the Nexus 9, its display measures 7.9 inches, with 1 inch less than the Google device's display. But the resolution is the same on both IPS LCD screens: 2048x1536pixels, but a smaller display will support greater pixel density, and the N1 takes the lead with 324ppi, while the Nexus 9 offers 281ppi. This means that the Nokia device has a sharper screen and offers vibrant colors.
For the hardware and OS, both tablets have 64 bit processors, but the Nokia N1 is more powerful, using an Intel Atom Z3580 quad-core 2.3GHz processor with PowerVR G6430 graphics and 2GB of RAM, while the internal memory has a capacity of 32GB and doesn't support expansion. The Nexus 9 has a Denver processor supported by an Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset and has the same clock speed, but two cores, which makes it weaker. It runs on Android Lollipop with 2GB of RAM and it’s available in two variants of internal memories: 16GB – WiFi, and 32GB – LTE. The Nokia N1 also comes installed with Lollipop, but includes the Nokia Z Launcher, which will allow users to draw letters on the display and the software will recognize the app starting with that letter, and will launch it.
For the battery and camera specs, the Nokia N1 comes with a smaller battery of 5300 mAh (18.5 Wh), while the Nexus 9 is equipped with a 6700 mAh battery and they should provide a similar duration of use, around 10 hours.
The Nokia N1 has a front camera of 5MP, but it’s disadvantaged because it lacks the LED flash feature on the back. The Nexus 9 has a 1.6MP front camera.
The Nokia N1 is around $250, while the Nexus 9 cost $400.
