Caramel apples may be bad for you for reasons that involve more than just calories and unhealthy fats.
Federal health officials reportedly stated that at least four people have died and more than two dozen have gotten sick from eating pre-packaged caramel apples contaminated with listeria, according to CBS News.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reportedly stated that the outbreak began in mid-October and cases have been reported in 10 states. 28 people have reportedly been sickened, 26 were hospitalized and five died.
Listeriosis was reportedly confirmed to have contributed to at least four out of the five deaths.
CBS Minnesota has reported that caramel apple products purchased from Cub Foods, Kwik Trip and Mike’s Discount Foods could be affected as well as brand names, including Carnival and Kitchen Cravings.
CDC officials reportedly warned consumers not to eat any of the caramel apples as they might be bad or dangerous for you.
“Although caramel apples are often a fall seasonal product, contaminated commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples may still be for sale at grocery stores and other retailers nationwide or may be in consumers’ homes,’ CDC officials said in a statement.
The illnesses due to caramel apples reportedly began between October 17 and November 27, according to the Seattle Times.
Symptoms of listeriosis reportedly include fever, muscle aches or stiff neck.
