With the lead "Beetlejuice 2" cast confirmed to reprise their roles, director Tim Burton insists the new movie won't be a sequel. What it's actually going to be is yet to be revealed.
An updated "Beetlejuice 2" cast confirms the movie will actually happen, more than two decades after the first "Beetlejuice" came out in theaters. Tim Burton will once again direct, and is expected he won't deviate much from the story arc of the first movie.
"There's a script now, that I think is closer to what it could be and I'm excited about it. I wouldn't call it so much a sequel, but it'll have some characters [from the original 'Beetlejuice']. It's a bit too early to say but it's definitely something that's on my radar and something I'd love to do." (screenrant.com)
Burton plans to showcase Michael Keaton in a new round of antics in "Beetlejuice 2," but it doesn't mean the new movie is an update in the same way Star Wars VII and Jurassic World are intended to be. Details of the plot are still unclear, but "not a sequel" could eliminate plenty of wild story arcs.
Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis can't reprise their roles, though. It'll be difficult to bring them back as the same ghosts Keaton dealt with, given their age. A cast member (Glenn Shadix) also passed away during the long delay "Beetlejuice 2" was being sorted out.
A similar rehashed movie was a considerable flop in theaters, in spite of the success of the original. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels recently teamed up for "Dumb and Dumber To," but was met with lukewarm response.
Tim Burton plans to bring back the magic of the original in the reprised "Beetlejuice 2" cast, but with restrictions in the story arc in place, critics expect a more somber outlook for the movie, compared to the original.
