For those wondering how one would survive in Mars, a new kind of technology may answer your question.
A professor from Ohio University and her team reportedly developed pee powered technology that might give astronauts access to clean water extracted from their own urine, according to the DelhiDailyNews.
We know, it’s gross and amazing at the same time.
Geradine Botte, Ohio University’s Center For Electrochemical Engineering Research director, reportedly realized that it was possible to extract water and hydrogen from urine while she was working on a fuel-cell technology twelve years ago. Botte then developed and trademarked Greenbox, a metal box of tubes that can convert urine into water and energy, a process that’s reportedly been named pee to power.
The Greenbox might reportedly be used during an unmanned flight to Mars in 2018 to determine if it’ll be effect in the 2025 mission that will carry humans to the planet, according to Chinatopix. The new technology was reportedly purchased by the U.S. Department of Defense in 2012 for a project that was related to wastewater treatment.
However, it has since been found that the Greenbox can do so much more.
The Greenbox is reportedly estimated to produce at least 16ml from 20ml of human urine from the Earth. It can also reportedly recover nitrogen from the urine.
