NYPD officers turned their backs on New York Mayor Bill de Blasio at the funerals for the police offers who were shot and killed in Brooklyn last month, according to the Washington Post.
A day after Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at the funeral for the NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, he reportedly spoke about those who turn their backs at the service held for the cops.
“They were disrespectful to the families involved,” de Blasio stated on Monday.
He added, “They were disrespectful to the families who had lost their loved ones. I can’t understand why anyone would do such a thing in the context like that.”
The protest involving the officers turning their backs reportedly came after Commissioner Williams Bratton asked them not to stage a repeat of Officer Rafael Ramos’s funeral, according to The Atlantic. The relationship between the mayor and some members of the NYPD has reportedly deteriorated since the two officers were shot in Brooklyn.
“We might be reaching a tipping point with the mind-set of officers, who are beginning to wonder if the risks they take to keep communities safe are even worth it anymore,” Milwaukee Country Sheriff David Clarke stated.
He added, “In New York and other places, we’re seeing a natural recoil from law enforcement officers who don’t feel like certain people who need to have their backs have their backs.”
New York has reportedly seen 332 homicides last year, a drop from 335 a year earlier, the police stated. There were also reportedly fewer robberies, burglaries, rape and felony assaults in 2014 than there were in 2013, according to numbers that were released on Monday.
