Amanda Waller Role Confirmed In ‘Suicide Squad’ Cast? ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Star Viola Davis Talks On The Role Of The Overseer, Previously Pegged For Oprah Winfrey

The "Suicide Squad" cast is hyped and star-studded, with confirmed roles for Will Smith and Jared Leto.

The once underestimated property of Warner Bros. and DC Comics seems to be going all out in casting, though, even for second-tier roles. It was previously rumored Oprah Winfrey would play a key role in the film, and now "How To Get Away With Murder" star Viola Davis was offered the same part.

"The Help" actress Viola Davis confirmed she was offered the role of Amanda Waller in the "Suicide Squad" cast, the shrewd government agent tasked to oversee the team of misfits. Waller's comments came short of confirming she's already part of the cast, but she was very positive about her involvement.

"I'm fascinated in exploring [Amanda Waller's] psychology, just put it that way. And I'm excited to pick up a gun," she said during a promotional interview for her new movie "Blackhat."

Davis admits she's yet to dig deeper into the character, but was excited about the dangerous mystery surrounding the Suicide Squad's overseer.

"I have not started reading [the comic book source material] yet. I've read up about her but I'm working out my schedule for Suicide Squad... I'm fascinated by her. I'm fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She's this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will.'

Amanda Waller's character came in two versions in the DC graphic novel; initially a large, powerful, ruthless government official who's willing to send criminals to their deaths, she was revamped into a younger, thinner version who's hands-on and dirty in the field.

It's yet to be determined which version of Amanda Waller Viola Davis will play in the "Suicide Squad" cast, if she's confirmed for the role. The movie is pegged for an August 5, 2016 release date (screenrant.com).
