John Jonchuck, Jr. allegedly threw his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge to her death, an act that was reportedly witnessed by a police officer, according to CBS News.
Jonchuck has reportedly been charged with first degree murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer.
Police are reportedly uncertain whether his daughter, Phoebe Jonchuck, was alive when she was allegedly thrown into the water. Police have reportedly stated that they encountered Jonchuck just after midnight on Thursday when he sped past a St. Petersburg police officer.
The officer reportedly turned on his lights and when Jonchuck pulled over at the Dick Misner Bridge, police said the officer saw him throw his daughter off the bridge. Jonchuck then allegedly sped off, but was apprehended about 30 minutes later.
Before the man allegedly killed his daughter, attorney Genevieve Torres had reportedly met with the father to discuss the custody case for his daughter and became worried after he had made odd statements, which were reported to the police, according to The New York Times. The police reportedly interviewed Jonchuck and his daughter, but both appeared to be fine.
“She was smiling and appeared healthy, properly clothed and happy,” documents reportedly read.
A little more than twelve hours later, Jonchuck reportedly threw his daughter off a bridge.
Phoebe’s parents, Jonchuck and Michelle Kerr, were reportedly together for six years, and police were called on various occasions for domestic violence-related complaints. Despite the conflict between her parents, it seemed that Phoebe had a good relationship with her dad.
“I always saw him as a good dad,” explained Kerr.
She added, “She would always say, ‘I love you daddy.’ She loved her dad.”
Linda Mattos, the owner of a daycare that looked after Phoebe, had reportedly described the little girl as “very smart.”
“She hated the water and she didn’t know how to swim. That’s what bothered me the most this morning because I knew how much she hated the water. She would’t even take a bath,” explained Mattos.
