"The Purge 3" release date skips this year, and is confirmed for summer of 2016. America gets a reprieve for a year with the third installment, with "The Purge: Anarchy" star Frank Grillo expected to make a comeback as The Sergeant.
The fictional Purge which started in 2013 is an annual event, but the third movie skips a year for a summer 2016 launch. The horror genre will be confirmed as another anthology if "The Purge 3" release date jumpstarts a movie series in the likes of "Saw" and "Paranormal Activity."
"The Purge: Anarchy" left enough room for a follow-up. The character of Carmelo Johns, played by Michael K. Williams, was brewing up a revolution against the "forefathers" who kicked off the one night a year, free-for-all on crime as a national mandate. Johns entered the scene towards the end of the movie, sparing The Sergeant (Frank Grillo's) life.
Spoiler alert: The Sergeant was among the few who survived the night of The Purge, which opens up the possibility of a comeback, or maybe an anthology of sorts.
Writer/director James Monaco previously considered the possibility of a 2015 "The Purge 3" release date, in keeping with the tradition of the fictional event. Monaco was surprised by the reception for the first two movies:
"I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become, and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise." (cinemablend.com)
Michael Williams hinted the sequel set his character up for an expansion of sorts, but declined to comment on the details. The sequel widened the story arc of the first movie, exploring the events of The Purge on the streets.
The movie also exposed a national conspiracy to systematically eliminate the marginalized in the population, using "purging" squads to help increase the death toll.
Is there a full-scale revolution in store for audiences on "The Purge 3" release date?
