Published reports say Sony's PS4 sold 18.5 million units before Christmas, compared to 10 million units shipped Xbox Ones. However, Microsoft's sales appeared to be catching up to Sony's PS4. After the recent Sony hack on video consoles, Sony's products appeared to be in jeopardy.
PS4 and Xbox One accounts were hacked during the holidays. A group named 'Lizard Squad' claimed responsibility for the attack saying they wanted to see how vulnerable the passwords and personal information were online. For both Microsoft and Sony video game customers, 'it was the worst possible Christmas,' according to reports. Gamers who bought new Xbox One or PS4 units were not able to able to use them for the holidays since it took at least four days for the video game consoles to be fixed.
The hack was allegedly caused in retaliation for the very controversial movie "The Interview" released by Sony Entertainment Pictures.
After a week of succumbing to the hacks, both Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One appeared to be running smoothly.
However, since January 3, 2015 Xbox One has jacked its price back up to $400, which was not a good strategy if the Richmond, Seattle-based firm wants to compete with Sony's PS4 for the rest of year.
Gamepur.com shared, "Microsoft will need to make some changes if they plan on surpassing Sony this year."
The report added, "If you can recall back in November of 2014, Microsoft made a huge change that allowed their Xbox One console to outsell the PlayStation 4 both that month and for the month of December 2014. During November 2014, Microsoft made the decision to reduce the price of the Xbox One from $399 to $349 which did not include the latest generation of the Kinect and the results were extremely positive in terms of sales.
