Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lopez may have strayed off the script during their spiel at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, but the risk paid off; the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" actor's comment sparked a backlash at Twitter which helped bump his and J-Lo's popularity just the same.
Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lopez were caught in a bit of a tussle last Sunday, presenting a Golden Globe award. The pair announced the nominees for Best Actor in Mini-Series/Drama. J-Lo joked as they were about to announce the winner "You want me to do it? I have the nails?" and Renner shot back with "You have the globes too."
The moment was a bit awkward, but the "Boy Next Door" star managed to laugh it off. Renner didn't do so well afterwards, though, earning a backlash on Twitter for the crass remark.
The 44-year old actor was overwhelmed with a backlash of tweets, many ridiculing him for the remark. Labels ranged from "Best Supporting Creep" to "Boob-seeking robot," according to the Daily Mail report.
Renner took all the comments in stride, though, tweeting a photo with Jennifer Lopez on stage with a caption: "A reminder not to take this s**t so serious. Thanks Jennifer -- You're a gem.x."
Jennifer Lopez wore a Zuhair Murad gown with a plunging neckline for the event, which evidently left Renner distracted for a while and prompting the off-script comment (cinemablend.com).
Renner's comment was also considered in contrast to the tone of feminism in Sunday's Golden Globes. Aside from two women hosting the show, Maggie Gyllenhaal also delivered a rousing speech on female empowerment after accepting her award for Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini Series.
Oprah Winfrey and Meryl Streep were also in attendance, which highlighted Renner's remark, considered by many as sexist.
J-Lo took "The Bourne Legacy" actor's comment quite lightly, though, even defending Renner afterwards. "That was really funny. He's a very funny man. It even made me a little hot."
