20-year-old Christopher Lee Cornell was reportedly arrested on Wednesday before he could put his alleged ISIS-inspired attack into action, according to CNN.
Despite months of alarming posts that Cornell made on social media that authorities had become aware of, the man’s parents have reportedly stated that their son is not a terrorist and was set up by the FBI, according to ABC News.
“I know my son probably better than anyone,” Cornell’s father, John Cornell Sr. told the news outlet.
He added, “He’s a mommy’s boy. His best friend is his cat Mikey. He still calls his mother ‘Mommy.’ Just a typical kid.”
Cornell’s mother, Angela Carmen, reportedly added that she’ll “be right by” her son’s side.
Cornell’s alleged plan reportedly involved setting off pipe bombs to put lawmakers and employees in flight and then gun them down with an assault rifle as they ran across his path, wrote Special Agent T.A. Staderman.
Cornell had reportedly made preparations with a partner and had researched bomb-making instructions. He had reportedly bought two M-15 rifles with 600 rounds of ammunition as well.
The man Cornell believed was his partner was reportedly an FBI informant.
Cornell’s arrest was reportedly made at his parents’ house, where he had lived.
“We heard a pound on the door,” stated John Cornell.
Cornell’s father reportedly stated that his son only had about $1,200 in his bank account, which was not enough money to fund an attack.
Cornell will reportedly have his first appearance in court on Friday, according to his parents.
