A 2-year-old boy identified as Kaleb reportedly died after he shot himself in the chest on Wednesday.
Police stated that the toddler found a .380-caliber weapon that belonged to his father in the family vehicle, according to USA Today.
Kaleb reportedly found the gun in the glove compartment and squeezed the trigger, shooting a bullet into his chest.
“Kaleb barely got the trigger pulled, but it was enough,” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri stated.
Kaleb’s father reportedly had a concealed weapons permit and got the weapon to protect himself as he works long, late hours, explained the man’s father, Kevin Ahles, according to Tampabay.com. The 23-year-old father was reportedly very aware of the rules of gun safety.
“He was talked to a million times,” explained Ahles.
He added, “He took the class and everything. Yesterday was just a lapse of judgement. I’m not blaming my son. Guns and kids don’t mix.”
Kaleb’s father reportedly usually keeps the gun with him, but left it in the car because he was helping Kaleb’s mom, Christina Nigro, move out of her house and into his apartment. After hearing the shot of the gun, Kaleb’s dad reportedly sprinted back to the child with the boy’s mother, who performed CPR, but the child could not be saved.
Kaleb’s brother, 4-year-old Carson Ahles, reportedly doesn’t understand that his brother is gone, the grandfather stated.
“He saw his brother bleeding from his chest, his eyes closed,” Ahles stated.
He continued, “He thought he was asleep.”
The family is reportedly struggling to break the tragic news to him.
“We’re trying to figure out how to do that now,” stated Ahles.
He added, “This is a parent’s and grandparent’s worst nightmare.”
