Kim Jae Joong and actress Bae Jong Ok play mother-and-son spies working for opposing sides in "Spy." But they are not the first k-drama actors to do a convincing job of playing secret agents.
If you love k-dramas with political action and intrigue, here are a few of our favorite spy dramas. They feature some appealing spies:
1. "Level 7 Civil Servant"
This comic take on espionage makes spying seem like fun and a sure-fire route to romance. Joo Won, Choi Kang Hee and 2PM's Hwang Chansung play rookie spies who must learn the rules in "Level 7 Civil Servant." Joo Won's character Han Gil Ro has grown up with the dream of becoming a secret agent, but following the rules is not always easy.
2. "King 2 Hearts"
This romantic comedy about espionage features Ha Ji Won as Kim Hang Ha, a tough North Korean special forces officer, who is assigned to spy on the royal family. She eventually marries the fictional prince, played by Lee Seung Gi and becomes his princess. Then she must decide where her loyalties lie.
3. "Spy Myung Wol"
"Birth of a Beauty" star Han Ye Seul appeared in this comedy as an elite North Korean spy assigned to kidnap a popular Hallyu star played by Lee Jin Wook. The ill-fated kidnapping is part of a plot to weaken the effect of the Hallyu.
4. "Time Between Wolf and Dog"
Lee Jun Ki's character in "Time Between Wolf and Dog" grew up in the home of his adoptive father, an NIS agent, and following in his footsteps seemed only natural. He not only becomes an undercover agent, but after he is kicked out of the NIS, he stages his death and returns to the NIS under a pseudonym. He's truly a double agent.
5. "City Hunter"
Lee Min Ho is not exactly a spy in "City Hunter" but he becomes an undercover agent at the Blue House to exact revenge for the death of his mother's husband, who was a spy, and seek revenge for his adoptive father, whose espionage mission was betrayed. Lee Min Ho may play the only undercover agent who set out to battle the bad guys wearing skinny pink jeans.
6."Iris:"
The National Security Service agent played by Lee Byung Hun is used and then abandoned by his superiors after fulfilling his mission. This action-packed drama has several really appealing spies, both good and bad ones. Kim Tae Hee plays the woman Lee Byung Hun loves. Kim So Yeon plays a sexy North Korean spy and Big Bang's T.O.P. plays a ruthless killing machine.
7. "Athena: The Goddess of War"
This drama is a spin-off of the wildly popular "Iris" and stars Jung Woo Sung, Cha Seung Won, Soo Ae and Lee Ji Ah. The fast-paced drama begins in the same time period as "Iris" and concerns a nuclear energy program that is meant to unify the Korean Peninsula. Super Junior's Choi Si Won also has a role as a data analyst.
