"The Imitation Game" star, Benedict Cumberbatch's racist comments created a negative buzz in both Hollywood and the UK.

However, "Selma" star David Oyelowo defended his fellow British actor, calling the issue "ridiculous" and "silly."

"I think it's ridiculous," the British actor, who played Dr. Martin Luther King in the Academy Award nominated movie, told The Guardian regarding Benedict Cumberbatch's racist comment.

The Golden Globe nominee said that Cumberbatch was "a huge supporter of black performers" if his whole speech had been highlighted.

"To attack him for a term, as opposed to what he was actually saying, I think is very disingenuous and is indicative of the age we live in where people are looking for sound bites as opposed to substance," he continued.

Complimenting the "Sherlock" star, Oyelowo continued, "He's a brilliant actor, he gives a brilliant performance in 'Imitation Game' and, like I say, it's just a diversion from what we should be talking about, which is that astounding performance."

He also added a prediction, saying, "I think it's just part of the silly news cycle that we all feed off and it will go away like chip paper as it does."

Cumberbatch reportedly unwittingly used the word "coloured" for dark-skinned actors, when he answered a question about diversity in Hollywood.

"I think as far as coloured actors go it gets really difficult in the UK, and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here (in the US) than in the UK, and that's something that needs to change," he previously told Tavis Smiley.

Anti-racism charities reportedly applauded for his speech, several zoned in on the term he used.

"The Hobbit" actor quickly apologized for the "outmoded terminology" according to The Independent.

"I feel the complete fool I am and while I am sorry to have offended people and to learn from my mistakes in such a public manner please be assured I have," the 38-year-old actor, known for keeping to traditions, said in a statement following the issue.
