Fans have been scouring "Sherlock" season 4 spoilers ever since the third season ended in early 2014. Announcing a special episode right before the next season starts only increased anticipation for the Emmy Award winning show.
Last Tuesday, Mark Gatiss, one of the series' showrunners, nearly gave "Sherlock" fans a heart attack when he posted a rather cryptic tweet.
"We Gingers must stick together...#Sherlock," he captioned a photo of a shop glass front.
The shopfront held the sign, "Jabez Wilson, Pawnbroker, Est. 1854," making avid followers of the BBC crime drama assume that this particular photo was a clue for the plot of the show.
Based on the hint, fans speculated that the "Sherlock" season 4 spoiler that Gatiss shared would be based on "The Adventure of the Red-Headed League."
Will this story be the basis for the Christmas special, which is planned to air by the end of this year?
"The Adventure of the Red-Headed League" is a story of a ginger pawnshop owner (Jabez Wilson) who is hired by the said league to copy the Encyclopedia Britannica entry by entry. Sherlock later finds out that he was just conned by bank robbers to keep him out of his pawnshop so that they can build a tunnel from there to the bank next door.
In previous "Sherlock" season 4 spoilers and photos, the show's main characters, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, were seen wearing Victorian-era clothing. They were also spotted filming at the Gloucester Cathedral in January.
"I don't know the plot but they moved a single bed into the crypt before they started filming," The Mirror reportedly quoted a church insider as saying.
The group was also recently spotted filming in Bristol with Natasha O'Keeffe according to the Daily Mail. She was seen dressed in a Victorian-era wedding dress and held on to two pistols. The crew filmed her as she shot herself with one of the guns.
No official statement was given about the Christmas special plotline or for the fourth season but fans can be assured that they will once again see Sherlock Holmes towards the end of this year.
