It looks like a new actor is being rumored to play the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in Marvel Cinematic Universe as Donald Glover is being targeted for role of the web-slinger.
According to USA Today, the former "Community" star talked about the possible role of Spider-Man in the future, now that Sony is collaborating with Marvel studios of re-introducing him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Glover started a campaign for the role of Spider-Man several years back when Sony decided to have reboot of the movie franchise, which was eventually taken by Andrew Garfield.
“I’m leaving it to (the fans). Campaigning’s part of life, but for me, I’ve got a lot of stuff that I’m really excited about, and dropping it all… of course it’d be an honor. But it’s fine if it comes to me, if not, you know. I’m very Daoist about it,” Glover said during an interview with Yahoo Movies.
Now that Andrew Garfield has officially left the role of Spider-Man, this could be Glover's opportunity to seize the role once again.
“Of course, I would always be honored to play Spider-Man. But I just want the Spider-Man movie to be dope, that’s all I want,” Glover said.
Movie Pilot previously reported that four actors are being eyed for the role which includes Zac Efron, Logan Lerman, Dylan O'Brien, and Jay Baruchel.
However, this Spider-Man is somehow different, in a way that he isn't Peter Parker. According to Screenrant, Sony Pictures President Doug Belgrad specifically named Peter Parker as Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; however, TheWrap reporter Jeff Snieder allegedly hints that this Spider-Man is Miles Morales from the Ultimate Marvel Comics Universe, during a recent Meet the Movie podcast.
Screenrant adds that Snieder wanted Sony to combat the perception of racism among the studio’s higher-ups regarding the Spider-Man casting.
“I really feel strongly. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with a major black comic book character. Snieder said. "Like I mentioned last week, the emails that leaked were perceived as racist in some quarters. I really think that’s going to play into things.”
However, Sneider recently debunked several claims, and clarified certain statements in a series tweets he posted on Twitter.
It is worth mentioning that Andrew Garfield was open on the possibility of having Miles Morales replace his character in future films, during an interview with Comic Book Resources.
"I have given that thought. I think one of the amazing things about Spider-Man is that you don't see skin color when he's in the suit. You don't see any religious beliefs. You don't see any denominations. Everyone can project themselves into that suit," Garfield said to Comic Book Resources.
Garfield further adds,"It's incredibly powerful in that way. So of course I think it's important that the openness, the casting, in terms of who could be Spider-Man, could be absolutely anyone. A hero is a hero, whether you're a man, woman, gay, lesbian, straight, black, white or red all over - it doesn't matter."
