'India's Daughter' Documentary: Convict Mukesh Singh Speculated To Receive Rs 40,000 To Be Feature In The Film? While Leslee Udwin Clarifies The Rumor

Leslee Udwin, who made the controversial documentary "India's Daughter," clarified that convict Mukesh Singh was not paid just to be featured in the film.

The BAFTA award winning director said that the allegations that the convict was paid Rs 40,000 to feature in the documentary is a lie,The Economic Times reported.

"It is a malign, malicious smear campaign, I did not pay Mukesh any money, nor his family, nor any other interviewee in the whole film."

"It is an absolute rule for me that when contributing to a social documentary in the public interest, as an interview, you either do it for free or not at all," she added.

Udwin added that she was upset with people who are against with the "India's Daughter" documentary. She also accuses the government of "repeating erroneous information and wild assertions without doing proper fact-check."

Furthermore, Udwin stated that the victim's family are supportive on "India's Daughter" documentary, she added that before she left in New Delhi, Jyoti's father last words were: "We are very happy with the work you are doing and remember when you walk the right path, there will always be obstacles and there will always turns."

Jyoti Singh's father Badri said that everyone should be able to watch the documentary to be able to understand "the bitter truth" about the death of his daughter.

The "India's Daughter" documentary is based on Jyoti Singh's, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, gang-raped in December 2012. The film shows the tragic sequence of events of the gang-rape, which began with a trip to a New Delhi cinema on Dec. 16, 2012 Sunday, when Singh with a male friend accompany her to watch the movie "The Life of Pi." At around 8:30 in the evening, Singh and her friend got into an off-duty charter bus, but as the bus travelled, Singh was raped by four men including a minor. Her body was thrown on the street and she died after 13 agonizing days staying in the hospital.
