Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Adam Sandler's science fiction comedy film "Pixels."

The trailer arrives four months ahead of the film's scheduled release, and shows a giant glowing Pac-Man on a rampage through New York.

According to Philly.com, Sandler portrays the role of a former arcade gaming champ tasked with saving Earth from an invasion of aliens characterized by giant versions of classic videogame characters like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. The story revolves around the aliens misreading video feeds in space exploration as a revelation of war against them.

The movie also features Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Brian Cox, Ashley Benson, Jane Krakowski, Michelle Monaghan and Kevin James. Chris Columbus who helmed various "Harry Potter" films and "Home Alone," directed the film from a screenplay written by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling.

"Pixels" was a short film made back in 2010 about 8-bit video game characters such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders. The short film, directed by Patrick Jean, centred on an invasion of the New York City by the classic video-game characters. One of the cool conceits of the film was the pixelization of the objects as well as the people affected by the video game characters, until finally the entire world was reduced to one giant pixel.

Forbes noted that the short film was so popular that Columbia Pictures and Adam Sandler's film company, Happy Madison Productions decided to develop it into a major motion picture.

The original version of Pixels did not explain why video game characters were running berserk and destroying Earth. According to Forbes, an old TV all of a sudden released a cloud of pixels which then transforms into the various video game characters, which starts pixelating everything in existence.

The film is slated for a July 24, 2015, release.
