Former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight is reportedly being held on murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run charges filed after he struck two men, killing one of them, with his truck during a fight in a Compton, California, parking lot earlier this year, according to the News Observer.
A Los Angeles County prosecutor is now arguing that Knight’s bail should be set at $25 million, according to the LA Times.
The prosecutor reportedly called him a “prolific and unrepentant criminal” who has led a “shameless life of crime,” according to court papers filed on Thursday.
Deputy District Attorney Cynthia J. Barnes reportedly documented Suge Knight’s brushes with the law in nearly 300 pages of written arguments and supporting evidence, including more than a dozen police reports. Knight is reportedly suspected of extorting “taxes” from rappers and athletes who want to work in Los Angeles or Las Vegas, according to the sworn affidavit submitted by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Biddle.
Knight and an associate have also reportedly been involved in an extortion scheme that brought in more than $10 million.
49-year-old Knight is reportedly scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday morning for a hearing regarding his bail. If Knight does attempt to post bail, Barnes has reportedly requested that he prove that the money has not come from illegal activities.
If Knight is granted bail, he would reportedly either have to post the entire amount in cash or pay a bond company eight percent of the bail so they could put up the whole amount.
Knight was reportedly shot six times last year at a West Hollywood, California, nightclub and has claimed that he is still suffering form complications from his wounds. He has reportedly been taken by ambulance from a courthouse three times since he was charged with murder.
During the time that Knight allegedly ran over Terry Carter, he was reportedly out on bail in the case of an alleged robbery, according to Barnes.
“Not only did he disregard the constraints of bail, he escalated his criminal behavior to murder and attempted murder,” wrote Barnes.
