Robotech fans, listen up: According to recent reports, Sony has acquired the rights to make a live-action movie based on the anime series "Robotech."

Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are set to produce the "Robotech" film while "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" writer Michael Gordon is set to write the screenplay. Andy Muschietti, the director of the upcoming "Shadow of the Colossus" movie is set to direct.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the "Robotech" film project has been green lighted with a working crew, which means that the movie will soon be in production. Development has been stalled on "Robotech" more than once. Previously, it was reported that Tobey Maguire's production company had acquired the rights to the "Robotech" film and that Leonardo DiCaprio had turned down a role in "Star Wars VII" in order to star in the lead role.

However, both of them chose to work on "The Great Gatsby" film instead.

The "Robotech" movie takes place some time in the future, where humans fight against extraterrestrial beings by using massive machines (similar to Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim") that utilize technology, which had come from a spacecraft that crashed on Earth.

The popular Japanese TV show was first showed in the US in the 1980s, which inspired several video games, role playing games, toys and collectibles.

In an interview with Variety, Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael Luca stated that "Robotech" has a "unique way" of presenting characters that just seemed to come out of life.

He said, "That's why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction 'Robotech' offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless."
