Cortana, developed by Microsof,t is an intelligent voice-activated personal assistant for Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft Band and Windows 10.
A group of Italian hackers has claimed that they have ported over Cortana to Android. This news comes at the time when Microsoft is far from extending Cortana onto any other platform, IBNLive reported.
Although Apple was the first to bring a voice-powered digital assistant to smartphones with Siri, the Redmond, Washington-based tech company followed up in a big way with its own voice assistant called Cortana. Named after the Al companion from the "Halo" video game series, Cortana has been available on many Windows Phone models and is reported to play a significant role in the upcoming Windows 10, according to SlashGear.
As it is a Microsoft creation, it's no surprise that it has been limited to Windows devices -- until now.
The group of Italians, who call themselves OrangeSec, has reportedly revealed that the project is not that exciting to look at and that there are drawbacks. For one, users must be online for the assistant to work and, if that's not enough, she can only speak in Italian at this point. Nevertheless, to show off their sense of humor, the Italian group has named the mod "Portana."
For Portana to work on Android, the device must be online because the program is still communicating with Microsoft's back-end servers, OrangeSec revealed while explaining their hack at the Droidcon 2015.
This also implies that the program cannot be used to control or integrate with Android features like the original version, SlashGear noted.
In order to bring Cortana to Android, the Italian hackers deployed a combination of hardware proxies, DNS spoofing and custom SSL certificates. The hackers, however, acknowledged that it is mostly a proof of the concept and there are rare chances that their version of Cortana will ever see the light of day.
Cortana will reportedly release onto PCs and tablets alongside the release of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 OS.
