“Divorce Lawyer In Love” is a prime time weekend drama which replaced the ailing series “My Heart Twinkle Twinkle.” The premise is one that has become increasingly popular within Asian dramas with the focus on marital disputes dominating the 2014 Chinese drama, “Divorce Lawyers” and taking center stage in the 2015 Taiwanese series, “Murphy’s Law of Love.” As Koreans become more accepting of divorce, the person who becomes in villian in series like “Divorce Lawyer In Love,” is the attorney who profits from marital distress.

The series focuses on Ko Cheok Hee (Cho Yeo Jeong), a successful lawyer who indulges in expensive French lunches while neglecting to remember her office manager’s birthday. She is cruel to her staff, providing them with assignments on Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings. Cheok Hee lives for her job and doesn’t consider the consequences of her actions as a divorce lawyer.

Yeon Woo Jin portrays So Jung Woo, a hapless office manager, who is beaten down but maintains a steady moral compass.

When Cheok Hee has the opportunity to win a divorce case by presenting video evidence that was illegal obtained, Jung Woo heavily discourages her citing each of the laws she would break. Her desire to win the case causes Cheok Hee to present the illegal video, which she later discovers was orchestrated by the Hallyu star wife, who strip her husband from all of his assets. Cheok Hee is duped and ends up having her legal privileges suspended.

Episode 2 returns from the past to focus on the present day situation involving Cheok Hee and Jung Woo. The episode opens with the characters 3 years after the scandal, with Jung Woo serving as a newly established lawyer, while Cheok Hee is interviewing for an office manager position.

Shim Hyung Tak (Let’s Eat, Persevere, Goo Hae Ra), portrays Bong Min Gyu, the head lawyer of the firm who is willing to give Cheok Hee a second chance as an office manager.

The drama will undoubtedly escalate through Wang Ji Won’s character, Jo Soo A. Wang Ji Won has been delightful in her recent K-Drama appearances, which include “Fated to Love You,” the web drama “Some Kind of Goodbye,” and “I Need Romance 3.”

As episode 2 progresses, Cheok Hee continues to draw from her former ways, by taking on an investigation case for a potential divorce. She is quick tempered and shows little respect for Jung Woo, who is now her supervisor. While these scenes are difficult to watch, it is clear that she will receive her comeuppance before “Divorce Lawyer In Love” reaches its conclusion.

“Divorce Lawyer In Love” airs on SBS on Saturdays and Sundays in the 10 p.m. time slot.
