Syfy has just pulled the plug on the thriller series "Helix" after two seasons. The network has decided to cancell the show after the season 2 finale aired last April 10 because of its low ratings and alleged poor storyline.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Helix" will not be renewed for a third season even if the series finale was able to set a record-breaking 563,000 in viewership.
The website claimed that Syfy's decision to cancel the series was because it wanted to "focus on high-profile science fiction programming" such as "12 Monkeys," "The Expanse" and "Childhood's End." It was also mentioned that the cable network had several drama series lined up for 2016, including "Olympus," "Defiance," "Haven," "Z Nation" and "Dark Matter."
Although "Helix" was able to capture both the critics' and audience's attention, the viewership unfortunately was on a continuous downward slope which got the network executives worried. The series reportedly lost almost 75% of its audience in season 2.
According to Deadline, the Syfy thriller series debuted to 1.82 million total viewers before its ratings dropped dramatically in the second season. Many fans attributed the decline to poor storyline and slow pacing.
"Helix" stars Billy Campbell (Dr Alan Farragut), Kyra Zagorsky (Dr. Julia Walker), Jordan Hayes (Dr. Sarah Jordan), Neil Napier (Dr. Peter Farragut) and Mark Ghanime (Major Sergio Balleseros). The series follows a team of scientists investigating a dreaded disease outbreak at an Arctic research facility.
In season 2, the series welcomed Steven Weber (Brother Michael). The setting was also moved to a mysterious island inhabited by a cult.
Weber also stars in "Chasing Life" and "Murder in the First."
In a recent interview, Kyra Zagorsky teased that had "Helix" not been cancelled, forthcoming episodes will allegedly focus on Julia, Alan and Peter's relationship. Fans of the series would have seen more exciting plotlines involving the unusual love triangle.
