On May 1, Playtonic, a U.K.-based team comprising of former Rare developers, launched a Kickstarter for its new game dubbed, "Yooka-Laylee." The game reportedly passed its $270,000 goal in less than an hour and is currently ticking-up at a rapid clip, according to Polygon.

"Yooka-Laylee" is an all-new 3D platformer that Playtonic Games is calling a spiritual successor to its most cherished work in the past.

The creative talents behind "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Donkey Kong Country" came together to form Playtonic Games with an intention to create a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie. The new game needed only about 38 minutes to reach its funding target of £175,000 (around $265,000).

"Exploding Kittens," a card game from Elan Lee and The Oatmeal-creator Matthew Inman, which raised $8,782,571, is the current reigning champ for the most-funded Kickstarter game project, Wired noted.

The "Ouya" game console comes second, raising $8,596,474, while "Torment: Tides of Numenera," which has so far raised $4,188,927, is third.

That said, "Yooka-Laylee" is on track to generate over $25 million, according to Kicktraq, a website that analyzes funding periods, average pledges and other data to estimate a project's success.

Platforms for the games have also been announced:

According to Polygon, "Yooka-Laylee" is set doe release on the Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U.

"Yooka-Laylee" centers on two characters that form a symbiotic relationship, platforming and puzzle-solving using their super powers.

Yooka is a green chameleon who carries jokester bat Laylee on its back. The game is set across five worlds, with items to collect. While Yooka's special move is a tongue grapple, Laylee utilizes a sonar blast.

The Kickstarter pitch video shows characters, gameplay footage, as well as a soundtrack that takes you back to "Banjo-Kazooie," which was a huge hit on Nintendo 64.

Fans need to pay around $22 to get a console copy. By pledging at least $15, fans can get a copy of the PC version.
