Marvel altered the origin of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff once again, this time revealing that the mutant twins aren't mutants after all.
Numerous speculations regarding the true origin of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff made rounds in the runup to their appearance in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
To begin with, the comics cast doubt on Magneto's parentage of the mutant twins, and then Marvel's own movie modified their origin once more. And now, it's been retconned again.
Despite all these years, and after all they have done at Magneto's side, Marvel is now telling its fans that Scarlet Witch and Quicksikver aren't mutants after all. In Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña's Uncanny Avengers #4, slated to hit store shelves next week, Marvel is dramatically retconning years of constancy to modify Wanda and Pietro Maximoff's origins as mutants.
In an exclusive preview of Uncanny Avengers #4 as previewed by Yahoo, the High Evolutionary reveals that Magneto a.k.a Erik Lensher was never their father. And that's not all, he even explained that they do not carry the mutant gene.
In fact, the High Evolutionary himself claims responsibility for giving them their powers, as part of his enduring pursuit for genetic perfection, TechTimes noted.
It turns out Django and Marya Maximoff were always the twin's parents, but instead of being born mutants as a result to parentage from Magneto, they were instead failed experiments of the High Evolutionary. The High Evolutionary conducted experiments that gave Wanda and Pietro their powers, but the two were then returned to their parents in order to be raised believing they were ordinary mutants instead.
The big question is, what does this actually do to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver?
Actually, nothing, io9 noted.
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are still superheroes, still members of the Avengers.
That said, by contradicting that the characters were ever mutants, Fox is putting down its own interpretation of Quicksilver from "Days of Future Past," while legitimizing the origins of the MCU's take on the characters as they take their place in the Marvel movies beyond "Age of Ultron."
The question is whether Fox will have the right to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch since they are not mutants anymore. Fans will just need to wait and watch.
