Just one day after Glory Johnson announced her pregnancy on social media, Brittney Griner has decided to annul their 29-day marriage.
Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson recently announced that they are expecting their first child together, but the newlywed couple is headed toward splitsville as Griner has filed papers seeking to annul her 29-day marriage to Glory Johnson.
In a statement Friday, June 5, Griner said, "Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage."
"In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake," Griner added.
Johnson on the other hand told TMZ that she was "blindsided" by Griner's decision to file for an annulment. Johnson added that she was "extremely hurt" by Griner's actions.
Johnson's sports marketing agent, D.J. Fisher, told ESPN that "Glory was unaware of the filing and still loves and cares for Brittney."
Griner filed the court docs Friday stating that Johnson actually threatened her into getting married, further adding that the whole thing was a fraud.
Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson tied the wedding knot May 8, three weeks after the two WNBA stars were arrested in Arizona on domestic violence charges, according to records on ESPN.
Entering a diversion program, Griner agreed to plead guilty to disorderly conduct and attend 26 weeks of counseling. As soon as she completes the program, the charges will be wiped from her record. Johnson's case however was transferred to a jurisdiction without a diversion program, and thus her case is still pending.
Johnson can either fight the case in court or reach a plea agreement.
After investigating the altercation listed as "mutual combat" by the police, the WNBA suspended both players for seven games.
Johnson is quoted as saying she was the victim in the altercation in an article published by Sports Illustrated.
"I'm not going to throw Brittney under the bus ... and she's not going to throw me under the bus ... [but] what the [WNBA] did not say in the statements they released was that I pled not guilty," Johnson told SI.
"So for them to release a statement saying that we were both guilty in the situation, it's not right. It's not correct. ... Brittney pled guilty ... Brittney understands why I pled not guilty, and I understand why she pled guilty. ... She was even willing to speak to whoever she needed to, to get the point across," she added.
Just one day before Griner's divorce filing, Johnson announced that she has a bun in the oven on photo-sharing site, Instagram. The Tulsa Shocked confirmed that Johnson would miss the 2015 WNBA season due to the pregnancy.
"It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love," Johnson said in a statement provided by the team. "Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold.
"The entire process, from learning our fertility options, to making sacrifices necessary nine months before the child is born, is merely preparing me to become a great wife and an even better mother."
